Facing Fears in Port Lincoln

SA

Port Lincoln had been on our radar for a while, known for its seafood, wild coastline, and, of course, shark diving. But this stop was never going to be about relaxing by the water. Not when there was a dare on the table.

A mate had thrown down the challenge months ago: “If you’re going to Port Lincoln, you have to do the shark dive.” And so, here we were. With a healthy mix of nerves and determination, Cam signed up for a day out with Calypso Star Charters, one of the few operators licensed to offer shark cage diving with great whites in Australia.

The day started early with a four-hour boat trip out to deep waters, the swells growing bigger with every nautical mile. Out on the open ocean, it felt like the edge of the world. Unfortunately, the stars (and the sharks) didn’t align that day; no sightings, no dorsal fins slicing through the water. But it didn’t matter.

Because Cameron got in the cage anyway. Suited up, breathing through a regulator, and staring into the blue, he did the thing he came to do: face a lifelong fear of deep, open water. No shark needed! The adrenaline was real!

Back on dry land, we watched the sun set across the harbour. Port Lincoln surprised us with its energy and edge. It’s not every day you step outside your comfort zone with a splash (literally), but it’s always worth it.
