Off the Main Road is an Australian travel journal slowly exploring the quieter corners of the country. Small towns, long roads, outback light, and the moments you only notice when you’re not rushing.

We’re Cam and Neil, travelling full-time with our senior Staffy, Zoe, in our Winnebago Jervis. Most days you’ll find us wandering back roads, poking around tiny town bakeries, or chasing a sunrise somewhere unexpected. Every so often, we jump on the adventure bikes or take the Jimny down a dirt track just to see where it leads.

What started as a way to remember our travels has grown into a space for slow, meaningful stories from regional Australia. We like the unhurried routes. The small details. The towns most people pass through on their way somewhere else. This site is a place to share what we’ve seen, learned and laughed about along the way.

Here you’ll find practical guides, honest notes from the road, photo essays, and the occasional story about a stubborn water pump or a legendary local scone.

We’re not in a rush, and we don’t think travel needs to be either.

If you’d like to follow along, our Travel Dispatch is the best way to stay in touch. Every few weeks we send a small collection of stories, discoveries, and things that made us smile. No noise. No algorithms. Just life off the main road.

Thanks for being here. It means a lot to us…truly.

If you see us out there, feel free to say hi. Neil loves a chat, and Zoe will probably try to sit on your foot.

Why slow travel?

We’ve found that Australia reveals itself differently when you take your time. Small towns feel warmer. Long drives feel lighter. The unexpected moments, such as a stop you didn’t plan, a conversation at a caravan park or a lookout you stumble across, become the memories that last.

Slow travel isn’t about going as slowly as possible.

It’s about giving yourself enough time to actually see the places you pass through. To notice the details, meet the locals, and let the journey shape itself a little.

It suits our pace, our dog, our motorhome… and the kind of stories we like to tell.
