We’re Cam and Neil, the faces behind Off The Main Road. 👋
We’re travelling full-time with our senior Staffy Zoe around Australia in our Winnebago Jervis. 🐾
We love a side adventure exploring the back roads and tracks on our Suzuki adventure bikes, or our Jimny 4WD. If you see us on the road, feel free to say hi, Neil loves a beer, and we both love a chat!
Why We Built Our Own Space
This blog began, like many travel stories do, with a sense of freedom — wheels rolling, dogs snoring in the backseat, and open skies ahead. But over time, the meaning of “freedom” has shifted for us. It’s not just about travel anymore; it’s about voice, values, and where we feel safe being ourselves.
We launched offthemainroad.com.au not just to share the outback sunsets, quiet campsites, and quirky town bakeries we stumble across, but to step away from platforms that no longer feel like home.
The tipping point? Changes to Meta’s policies — Facebook, Instagram, and Threads — that now allow dangerous and dehumanising content. Allegations of “mental illness” or “abnormality” based on gender or sexuality are no longer moderated. Women can now be referred to as “household objects.” And content that argues some jobs shouldn’t be open to certain genders? That’s permitted too.
For us, that was a line in the sand.
As a gay couple travelling Australia with our old Staffy in tow, we didn’t set out to be activists. But visibility matters. Kindness matters. And where we put our words, images, and stories matters too.
So we built this space, not just as a blog, but as a digital campfire. A place where everyone’s welcome, where difference is celebrated, and where we can keep telling our stories on our terms.
Our interactions on the mentioned social media platforms will be limited and eventually cease, but don’t miss a moment of life off the main road. When you sign up for our newsletter, you’ll get a curated dose of travel tales, hidden gems, and real-life adventures delivered every couple of weeks.
It’s the best way to keep up with where we’ve been, what we’ve seen, and what’s made us laugh, groan or go wow. No algorithms, no fluff — just honest stories from the road, straight to your inbox.
We’ll still be sharing the same slow travel stories, the same honest moments from the road, and probably still raving about local scones. But now, we’re doing it in a place that reflects who we are.
Thanks for joining us here. It means the world.
