Sea Lions, Sunsets and Swaps

SA

Some stretches of road are magical, and this one from Baird Bay to Ceduna, gave us everything we love about coastal South Australia.

We kicked off with one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences we’ve ever had. Baird Bay delivered the goods, with a boat trip that got us swimming alongside a spirited sea lion pup, while the rest of the sea lion group kept a careful eye. The pup twirled in the shallows, playful and curious, while in deeper water we joined a pod of dolphins which were sleek, fast, and full of personality. Being in their world, even for a short time, was equal parts humbling and exhilarating. We came away grinning, salty and completely blown away. The hot chocolate and lamingtons on the way back to shore warmed us up!

From Baird Bay, we rolled into Streaky Bay and then Smoky Bay, where the pace slowed and the seafood was next-level. A chance conversation at the caravan park led to a great little trade; Two trays of fresh oysters swapped for a bucket of blue swimmer crabs, pulled straight from the ocean that morning. We cooked them up with simple sides and sat outside to watch the sky turn pink and gold. The sunsets along this part of the coast are unreal!

We wrapped up this leg of the trip in Ceduna, where we settled in for a few days. It gave us a chance to restock, reset and soak up the easy rhythm of life by the sea. Often the best part of the journey doesn’t involve ticking off landmarks, just slowing down and letting the road unfold.

Exploring the unbeaten paths of Australia, one adventure at a time! 🌿 Follow along as we uncover hidden gems, tackle rugged terrains, and embrace the thrill of exploring offbeat destinations. 🚙💨
