Tenterfield: Saddles, Pies and Country Charm
Pies, saddles, and cool mountain air. Tenterfield surprised us in all the right ways. A heritage town with a big heart and small-town charm, perfect for slowing down and soaking it all in.
Ballina: Prawns, Pubs and a Breakwater Stroll
Sea breezes, dolphin sightings, and a pub by the bay. Ballina gave us exactly the kind of coastal calm we needed. A giant prawn, a quiet walk, and zero influencer chaos.
K’gari: Sand, Sky and Saltwater Magic
From freshwater lakes and towering rainforests to beach highways and shipwrecks, K’gari is the wild heart of Queensland’s coast. We toured, swam, floated, and flew, and left with sand in our souls.
Hervey Bay: Salt Air and Slow Days
Beach walks, local markets, and whales in calm blue water — Hervey Bay is the coast at its most easygoing. Perfect for slow mornings, sea breezes, and a good reminder to pause awhile.
Bundaberg: Rum, Molasses and the Bear
From the sweet tang of molasses to the final sip of salted caramel rum, the Bundaberg Distillery tour is a mix of history, humour, and Aussie spirit, bold, local, and unmistakably Bundy.
Rockhampton Rhythm
We spent five relaxed days in Rockhampton with favourite brunches at Riverston Tea Rooms, exploring the Railway Museum, and soaking up the creative buzz at the Art Gallery. A perfect blend of history, art, and perfect blue skies.
Caves, Coast and Coffee
From the stillness of the Capricorn Caves to the sea breeze at Emu Park, Yeppoon offered a quiet stretch of coast, strong coffee, and a few days to slow down and breathe.
Longreach: Planes, Pioneers and Bucket Lists
Longreach delivered two bucket-list stops: the Qantas Founders Museum and the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. From jumbo jets to saddle shows, this outback hub captures the spirit of Australia from every angle.
Goondiwindi: River Walks and Cotton Country
Goondiwindi is a relaxed border town where river walks, local history, and cotton farming shape everyday life. Exploring on foot and learning about modern agriculture adds useful context to this practical Queensland centre.
One Ton Post: The Long Way to a Line
The One Ton Post near Mungindi marks the end of the longest straight section of the Queensland–NSW border. A quiet, historic survey marker that turns an abstract line on the map into something you can stand beside.
Nindigully Pub
Nindigully Pub, one of Queensland’s oldest hotels, offers riverside camping, country meals and the infamous Road Train Burger. A historic Cobb & Co stop near St George, it’s a steady outback pause before heading west.
Bendigo: The Great Stupa
We spent a slow morning at the Great Stupa near Bendigo, wandering reflective gardens, exploring inside the stupa, and enjoying lunch at the café. A calm, thoughtful stop that left us feeling lighter and at ease.
Bendigo: Beneath the Streets
We spent a few days in Bendigo visiting family and exploring its gold rush past. Going underground at Central Deborah Gold Mine revealed a larger, more industrial story than nearby gold towns, echoed above ground in Bendigo’s grand architecture.
Castlemaine: Goldfields Off the Main Road
Castlemaine sits at the centre of Victoria’s quieter goldfields. We explored Maldon, Chewton and Malmsbury, wandered historic diggings, found forgotten machinery and spent time under the Malmsbury Viaduct. A grounded, slow-travel look at the region’s gold rush past.
Canberra: Cold Snaps & Political Thrills
Canberra gave us politics, culture, frozen motorhome pipes, and a proper taste of ACT crispness. From Old Parliament House to Lake Burley Griffin, it was one of the most surprising stops of our shakedown trip.
Bays and Backroads
From Bermagui to Batemans Bay, the coastal road carried us past dolphins, fish and chips, and a growing sense of ease. Small towns, quiet bays, and days that felt unhurried—finally finding our road rhythm.
The Sapphire Coast Stretch
Tilba Tilba cheese, Bermagui’s Blue Pool, and tall pub stories marked the moment we started finding our rhythm on the road — and learned that good cheese might just be worth every detour.
Sand and Salt in Merimbula
In Merimbula, we traded busy travel for slow days by the sea. We fixed our first flat tyre, ate oysters by the dozen, and learned that quiet time can be the best part of the trip.
The Shakedown Begins
Our first motorhome trip from Geelong to Eden was equal parts chaos and discovery. We packed too much, sang off-key in a winery, and learned fast that the road has its own rhythm.
