Crabs, History and Sunsets

SA

Ardrossan turned on the charm for our short visit, right in the thick of blue swimmer crab season. The buzz was unmistakable with people lining the jetty with nets and buckets, waist-deep in water or leaning over the rails, all hoping for a good haul.

We kicked off the day with a visit to the Ardrossan Bakery, the kind of country bakery where everything looks too good to walk past. The pies were excellent, the coffee strong, and the shelves packed with locals grabbing their favourites. It was a warm and welcoming spot to start the day.

Afterwards, we made our way to the Ardrossan Museum, located within the original school building. It’s packed with local history, including a detailed look at the town’s agricultural past and the role Ardrossan played in the invention of the stump-jump plough, a humble but game-changing bit of farming kit. The volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable, happy to share stories that brought the region’s past to life.

Later in the afternoon, we took a quiet wander down the jetty at sunset, with golden light dancing across the gulf and the sounds of the day winding down around us.
